Origin
Echinocactus grusonii, also known as mother-in-law's seat or golden barrel cactus, originates from Central America, more specifically Mexico. The species was named after Hermann E. Gruson, a German craftsman and cactus grower. The growing conditions in its natural habitat are harsh, which is reflected in the plant's unique development and reproductive characteristics.
Characteristics
Echinocactus grusonii is a slow-growing, spherical cactus. It is a late-flowering species: its white flowers only appear when the cactus is mature, usually after twenty years of age. The plant can reach a height of 1 meter and a diameter of 80 centimeters. Its appearance is distinctive: it has numerous spiny ribs and dense, yellow thorns.
Care
Echinocactus grusonii requires special care. The cactus needs a lot of sunlight, so it should be placed in a well-lit area. During the day, the temperature can rise to 30 degrees, and at night it should remain above 10 degrees. It requires little water, and it is essential to prevent the soil from being constantly wet, as this can lead to root rot. It is recommended not to water it at all during the winter.
A little extra for safety:
As this cactus is famous for its extremely strong and sharp yellow spines, here are two quick tips:
-
Repotting: Always use thick protective equipment or several layers of folded fabric as a glove when moving it, as its spines can easily pierce simple gardening gloves.
- The large cactus shown in the photo was moved wrapped in old blankets.
-
Light requirements: If you keep it indoors, choose the sunniest south-facing windowsill. If it does not get enough light, the sphere will begin to "tip" (elongate), which is a sign of lack of light.
