Recommended for spacious, sunny, evenly warm rooms, stairwells, window sills, cool rooms, workplaces, offices, hotels, lobbies, and exhibition halls. Excessively dry air and stagnant water can cause the edges of the leaves to turn brown. Older leaves will dry out even under the best conditions.
Dieffenbachia is a perennial herbaceous plant with a straight stem and simple, alternate leaves with white spots. The species is popular as a houseplant due to its shade tolerance. Do not plant this plant in or around areas where children live. The raffids are toxic and can cause temporary loss of speech.
Dieffenbachia was named by Heinrich Wilhelm Schott, director of the Vienna Botanical Garden, in honor of Joseph Dieffenbach (1796–1863), a gardener.
